Colorado Xeriscape Design
There is a valid reason that xeriscapes have become a popular trend for Colorado homeowners. Our arid climate and the intensity of sun we receive make traditional grass lawns a wasteful, expensive, and outdated form of landscaping.
Removing grass and replacing it with mulch, hardscapes, rocks, perennials, and trees, makes for a landscape of visual interest, biodiversity, as well as a habitat for local animals and insects. Beyond being a water-conscious choice, xeriscapes are also less maintenance than a grass lawn.
Instead of mowing every week, perennials only require a once or twice-a-year pruning. Instead of a monotonous green lawn, perennials provide many colors of flowers and foliage as well as a three-dimensional aspect of height. Perennials and trees use drip irrigation which is slow and localized to the plant, allowing a small amount of water to seep deep into the soil, reducing evaporation, and using much less water than sod while keeping plants full and lush.

“Linden’s work xeriscaping our Fort Collins front yard is beautiful. He was limited by the HOA-approved plan but still managed to build a handsome design. The xeriscaping required some conversion of our sprinkler system to drip, and Linden Leaf Landscapes took care of that too. Linden is professional and efficient but still personal and genuine. It was a pleasure working with Linden Leaf and we are very proud of our “new” yard.”
Irrigated turf is the largest drain on water resources in our country, using more water than all crops combined. Water use is increasingly becoming a dire issue as rainfall and snowpack become less predictable and the population of the Front Range grows rapidly. Here in Fort Collins, our water comes from Horsetooth reservoir. That water comes all the way from the western slope. Most of the water from the Rocky Mountains goes to the western slope, but most of the development is on the Front Range. This is going to create more water shortages in the near future.
Choosing a xeriscape for at least most of your yard is a responsible and logical way to help preserve our future and save money on the increasing cost of water, all while creating a dynamic space for your family.

“Linden provided a turnkey “lawn to xeriscape” project for me and my adjacent two neighbors. He was on time and on budget with a high quality outcome. This included design and installation of a complex drip irrigation system. For the very few and minor post-project tweaks, Linden was timely and completed these items within the original budget. I highly recommend Linden Landscaping for any landscape and/or hardscape project.”
Colorado Xeriscape Incentive Program
Did you know that Fort Collins residents can receive a rebate for replacing grass with an eligible low-water landscape design. Through the program, eligible homeowners can receive a rebate of up to $1,200 to cover a portion of their xeriscaping costs. There is even an additional rebate for planting plants native to Colorado.
